ND200 Bicentennial Photo Exhibition

by | Feb 8, 2022 | Events

To commemorate the Singapore Bicentennial, the Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre (NDIMHC),   with the support of the Singapore Bicentennial Office, made a call to Singaporeans to contribute their personal photographs towards an exhibition “Singapore to Singaporeans – Pioneers and Descendants”.  The exhibition is still being hosted at the centre – along Singapore’s original waterfront at Telok Ayer – from March 2019 till now.

NDIMHC has more than 180 years of history, providing educational experience depicting the rich culture of Indian Muslims in the region. With this in mind, Mr Nasim, the Organising Chairman shared at the launch of the ND200 Community Photo Exhibition: 1 decided to make this a multi-cultural project because the stories of our pioneers —their similar aspirations, challenges and determination to protect their loved ones — cut across racial and religious lines.”

The exhibition “From Singapore to Singaporean — Pioneers and Descendants” was launched on 23 Mar, and will run till 31 Dec 2019. It features photos and stories of 100 Singaporeans of various races and religions, matched with old black and white portraits of their grand or great-grandparents who first stepped foot on this island way before 1965.

The curated collection consists of personal photos of 100 modern-day Singaporeans matched with old black and white portraits of their pioneering grand or great-grandparents who first set foot on this land during the maritime era (pre-1965) especially between the years 1819 to 1930.

This community initiative is to celebrate the contributions of the many families – both pioneers and descendants – symbolically represented by the 100 sets of photos – that have together made Singapore what it is today, over the past 200 years.

Opened by the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad in March 2019, other dignitaries who have visited the centre include our beloved President Halimah Yacob and Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Finance and Second Minister for National Development.

Over 14000 Singaporeans have visited the gallery. Do request for a tour by the Curator in the form found in the Home page.
